Breathing Exercise

Breathing Exercise:

Simple breathing exercises are a great way to calm the mind and body, while allowing for greater relaxation, focus, and clarity.  Here is a very simple and effective breathing exercise that can be done anywhere and as many times a day as you need!

  1. Sit comfortably with feet flat on the ground, back as straight as possible, hands resting on thighs, and eyes closed (preferably)
  2. Breathe in slowly through the nose for 3-5 seconds, feeling the chest and stomach expand
  3. Hold the breath for 3-5 seconds as you really feel the expansion of your trunk
  4. Breathe out slowly through the mouth for 3-5 seconds feeling the shoulders relax/drop and the weight of your body onto the chair/floor
  5. Repeat 3-5 times

Depending on your fitness level and lung capacity, there will be some variance in how long you can perform each step.  The goal is to gradually progress to the 5 second intervals.  I use this constantly through the day to help me relieve stress, clear my mind and refocus, or to just leave the day behind before I enter my home. Let me know how it helps you!

I hope this little stress management technique helps!  If you’re interested in meditation and more focused breathing techniques, check out The Essential Guided Meditation Series by CLICKING HERE!
